Ah... Graham. You have made the mistake of assuming that "Killing George Herbert" finishes where it does. It is a work in progress— I reckon about half-way through. If you are looking for a conclusion, then the series actually starts with the thesis and everything else is justification and explanation. Look here for the thesis.

But thanks for reading, and commenting. I appreciate your interest.

I skipped to the last chapter, and finding no concluding summary there, I guessed the meat of the conclusion would be here in the penultimate chapter, and I suppose it is.

Beautifully written, and clearly well researched. I don't I grasp the full sense of your thesis. However, it seems to me your case is well made and persuasive.

It may be that many church goers (at least, many sporadic attenders) would prefer their priests to be Herbertian. I was horrified to find, some years ago, that a vicaress of my (slight) acquaintance openly regarded the CoE as a branch of the social services. It is reassuring to find some - how can I put it - integrity? - exists in the organisation.

Graham

P.S. I am not a follower of any religion. I only got here as a result of following links relating to Rowan Williams' speech. And sorry, I think the criticisms of him and that speech are largely fair.
